B.C. Island Hopping 2020

After our Banff trip it was soon getting Fall. Looking at the forecast we saw a small window for another short trip to enjoy the last days of Summer for the year. We wanted to explore more places along the island and also had this idea to explore as many disc golf courses along the way as possible. A new hobby we picked up and follow passionately.

This little trip started by going from Horseshoe Bay to the Sunshine Coast together with MoJo. We stayed at Jonas Sister for the night who kindly borrowed us her kajaks for a short trip out to the see.

We paddled up the shore and enjoyed some sunshine.

After staying for a night and saying our goodbyes we went further North to Earls Cove where we took the ferry over to Saltery Bay to get to Powell River. Here we stayed with friends for a few more nights, doing some cooking together and relaxing. Since a big part of this trip was to explore disc golf courses along the way this town was an important stop. There is the small Larry Gouthro Disc Golf Course, the much nicer Sunset Disc Golf Course and then finally the specacular Craig Park Disc Golf Course, where I got my first and so far only ace shot. The course is faily wooded with elevation changes, but also some open fields. The signature hole is a downhill shot across a small creek.

I didn't take too many pictures, so here are just some shots from the sunset at the harbour.

The days were gone to quickly and we headed onto the next ferry over to Comox. Or first stop on Vancouver Island was further in the North at Campbell River. There we first stopped at a nice cafe called The Island Grind Coffee & Tea

and then played a round at the local disc golf course (another great one). Sadly JJ twisted he ankle here and she got herself injured :( After resting her foot for a while we headed to the pharmacy to get her an ankle brace, so she could walk better again.

On the way back we first stopped at Courtenay where I played a round at the small Lake Trail Golf Course and then met up with someone to return a disc I found in Vancouver when playing.
For the night we drove back down to the small town of Cumberland. Apparently a Mecca for mountain bikers, as we saw plently. A nice little town with a cool pub to hang out at.

Next day we headed to the Coal Creek Historic Park. Apparently this place has a lot of history because Chinese settlers were living here back in the day, mainly being involved in mining. They have a nice walk with signs that explain a lot about the history. And then there was also a disc golf course we had to check out:

After having a nice round at the course we headed to our ultimate destination of our trip: Hornby Island. To get there we first had to take the ferry to Denman Island and then taske a quick drive across the island for a second one.

Once in Hornby Island we set up our campsite at Ford's Cove. It is nicely setup with a small fire pit and a nearby washroom which made for a confortable stay. Hornby Island is famous for its nioce beaches. When we arrived it was a bit gloomy some days, but we also had some great sunshine coming through.

Tribune Bay Beach

Here our first time at Tribune Bay Beach. Not that many visitors at this time of the year and it was a bit too cold for swimming.

Other places we visited on the island in no particluar order:

Playing disc gold at the Joe King Park. They have these fun tonals to shoot at and funnily enough we recently met a himeless person in Vancouver who told us that he helped setting up the course back in the day when he was working on the island.

Joe King Park

Little Tribune Bay Beach. As the name suggest a bit smaller and more hidden away.

Grassy Point. Greak ocean views here.

The Helliwell Provincial Park. A true gem with cliffs to overlook the ocean from. You can also see whales if you are lucky and sea lions.

And more foggy views, which captures the atmosphere of the trip nicely.

Overall we had a great expriece and there was a lot more we explored there, like wineries and markets. Also the food was great. We can highly recommend Forage Farm & Kitchen.

Once our days on the island were over we headed back to Nainamo, played a quick round at the Bowen park there and then took the ferry back to the mainland.

Overall great trip and we hope to go back one day, esp when it's warmer.
